Susie Straussner – Jeweler
My previous life was as a Registered Nurse for over 30 years. My work required that I experience sadness as well as joy but it can take a toll on a person. When I retired, I vowed to do something really fun. As a child I loved making paper dolls and for some reason jewelry design and fabrication reminded me of the fun I had doing it. So, I started making jewelry which has enabled me to express my “inner child.”
In my jewelry designing, I strive to create items that are cute, playful, and pretty. I love asymmetry and whimsy and can’t help but make up stories about my pieces during the fabrication process. Most of the “animals” I design (either as pendants, broaches, or earrings) have names when completed and stories to go along with their names.
I like to use a mix of metals such as copper, brass, sterling, anodized aluminum as well as precious, semi-precious stones, and natural stone cabochons. At times I may use unexpected elements such as vintage buttons, plastic, and found objects. Recently, I have begun using new materials such as enamel, resin, metal clay, and even jewelers cement in my creations.
I’m constantly on the hunt for new techniques and take classes whenever I can while always keeping in mind that “Fun” is the name of the game here. I love making jewelry and have fun doing it! Come see me at Arts Prescott Cooperative Gallery.
